Today we're putting the spotlight on Eartha Kitt. If I'm not mistaken, she played Catwoman in the original live-action Batman TV series way back when. She has acted in more than thrity movies! Her most recent work was playing the voice of Yzma on The Emperor's New Groove and its spinoff series, The Emperor's New School. She died in December of 2008 due to colon cancer. May she rest in peace.

I've been moisturizing my hair a little differently for the past few months and I like how moisturized my hair feels now. The moisture doesn't evaporate the strand like it used to at the start of my healthy hair journey.

So, how do I moisturize now?

1. I spritz my hair with a light moisturizer, usually my CURLS Quenched Moisturizer or S-Curl Texturizer Stylin' Spray first, making sure my hair is damp.

2. Next, I moisturize with the Blended Beauty Happy Nappy Styles.

3. And finally, I seal with Coconut oil.

My hair feels so much better since I started this moisturizing routine. I thought I was the only person who moisturize like this, but surprisingly, a lot of people do the same thing!

Feel free to share your moisturizing technique!

I'd like to welcome the newest member to TCHD's family. My baby sister, Naïmah Sasha Augustin was born on March 23, 2009 at 9:43AM. The nurses couldn't believe that I was my mother's daughter. They thought I was her younger sister. LOL. She looks just like her mother!

Dalilredmama and MssMylo have been rockin' fro hawks for a while now. I love this hairstyle and can't wait for my own hair to get a little longer so I can try it out. Here's the step-by-step AND a video tutorial:

Step 1: Wet hair and add a leave-in or moisturizer
Step 2: Brush side of hair or smooth with hand.
Step 3: Pin the hair down with bobby pins, barrettes, or hair clips.
Step 4: Repeat steps 2 & 3 with the other side.

Hi, Belle. I read this article a few days ago about terminal length and wanted to know if there really such a thing as terminal length?
In short, yes. Terminal length is the length the individual hair grows to before shedding naturally. As I've mentioned before, the hair grows in a cycle of phases. First is the anagen phase or the growing phase. Next is the catagen phase, also known as the regressing phase. And last is the telogen phase which is the resting phase of the hair.

While these are the growth phases, there is also one more phase. It it known as the exogen phase. This phase is when the hair strand sheds from the follicle. Whatever length the hair is at the time is the length it will shed as. Please remember that every single hair on the head is going through a different phase.

While it is not shown in the picture above, the old club hair is shed in the exogen phase. While the club hair is shedding, there is hair already growing in the follicle.

Many associate the term terminal length with an overall length the hair grows before it just stops growing. That, in my opinion, is fictional.

Product Name: Ellin LaVar Textures SatinSoft

Price Range: $7.99 (12 oz)
Company: ELLiN LAVAR TEXTURES (http://www.ellinlavar.com/)
Catch Phrase: Bathes hair in rich, lavish moisturizers and conditioners. Closes and seals the hair cuticle for a smooth, silky feel. Helps end bad hair days.

What I Say: So far, Ellin Lavar Textures products have been good to me and this one was just as impressive. I detoxified my hair with my SDBSF Moroccan Mask and used this to wash my hair with after. My hair felt great. It was soft and it didn't kink up so tightly.

Product Tip: Use it before swimming in a pool or at a beach!

Today on Celebrity Hair, we take a look at Nadia Turner (of American Idol fame). I think she was one the first Black girls to don an afro on the show, but I could be wrong. I reeeally loved her voice, eclectic style, and hair. I especially loved the night she wore frohawk. Fierce indeed.

I'm pretty sure all of you are aware the I transitioned to Natural not too long ago. March 2nd to be exact. I just wanted to know what's going on with you and your natural hair...

Are you Relaxed but contemplating going Natural?

Are you Natural but contemplating relaxing?

Are you either one and want to stay that way?

Discuss! Discuss! I know that there are some people that want to relax, but are scared or want to go Natural but don't know how. Tell us your story and we'll help!

Previous Recipe: Brown Sugar Scrub, Herbal Shampoo, Shealoe Butter, Homemade Rosewater, Sulfur Growth Aid, Cayenne Pepper Stimulant, The 2Bossay Growth Aid, Moe's Growth Oil, Moisturizing Spritz

I was reading through Curly Girl and decided to post this recipe for my no-shampoo girls.

Baking Soda Cleanser
  • 1 TBSP baking soda
  • 1 cup warm water
Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake. Wet hair and blot out any excess water. Spray mixture onto the hair and let it sit for a minute. Rinse with cool water and style as usual (or condition the hair).

This isn't a recipe I made up... it actually is a recipe from Curly Girl, a book by Lorraine Massey (co-owner of DevaConcepts).

Product Name: DevaCurl No-Poo Cleanser
Price Range: $17.99 (12 oz)
Company: DevaConcepts (http://www.devaconcepts.com/)
Catch Phrase: DevaCurl's non-lathering, conditioning cleanser creates the ultimate healthy, bouncy curls. With its unique blend of botanically infused moisturizers, No-Poo provides maximum frizz prevention. Refreshingly scented with Peppermint and Turkish Rose..

What I Say: Although it's not moisturizing, it's a pretty great cleanser. It leaves my hair with that squeaky-clean (not stripped) feeling. I do make sure to follow each cleansing with a conditioner wash, of course. The smell is different. It's not fruity like most of cleansers. The smell actually reminds me of beer. Funny thing is, it contains hops. Hops has anti-bacterial properties in it which makes it a great addition to a cleanser.

Product Tip: Follow up with a moisturizing co-wash!

Hair feeling dry? Fill a spray bottle with distilled water and use it as a moisturizer! Remember, distilled water is a coarse-haired girl's friend!

Product Name: Ellin LaVar Textures LiquidMotion
Price Range: $7.99 (5 oz)
Company: ELLiN LAVAR TEXTURES (http://www.ellinlavar.com/)
Catch Phrase: Activates natural waves and curls leaving hair incredibly soft and shiny. Amplifies the effects of blow drying and setting the hair, builds body. ‘Memory Hold’ so style stays in place until you re-wet or re-heat the hair.

What I Say: My hair's been reacting well to thick moisturizers and this one is no different. It smells great and as soon as I applied it, my hair was soft. Even after a few hours, the moisturized feeling is still there. My hair is looser and tangle-free. This is truly a great product for us girls with naturally kinky and coily hair. The great thing about this product is that I can use it if I want to blow dry or set my hair.

Product Tip: Use it as a moisturizer or setting lotion!

Cupuaçu butter is a natural emollient from the seeds of the Cupuaçu Tree in Brazil. Cupuaçu butter is softer, creamier, and more hydrating than Cocoa butter and helps improve water absorption. Works well for dry/damaged hair!

We here at TCHD love Chrisette Michele's new look! But how 'bout you? DO YOU LOVE IT?

I know the term "snake oil" refers to any type of medicine or product that is bogus, but this is the real thing! Snake oil supposedly has inflammation-reducing properties because fats and oils from snakes are high in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). EPA is an omega-3 fatty acid by the way.

So, where'd I get it? Dalilredmama recently traveled to Haiti and received both Castor oil (a.k.a L'huile Mascreti) and Snake oil. She was told to mix the oils for better results. Even though I'd rather have just the Castor oil, the mix is just fine. I'm kind of scared to try it though... We'll see...

By the way, the picture to the left is an actual picture Dalilredmama took while driving around in Haiti. It's absolutely beautiful!

So far, I'm loving the coarseness of my hair. Odd, right? I love how it just kinks up but then turns into this lovely 'fro when I picked it out. I receive e-mails daily from women (and once in a while men) who always have something they HATE about their hair. So, I want to know...

What do you LOVE about your hair?

Do you love the length? Color? Texture? Tell us!

We all know eggs are great for the hair. But why? Egg yolks contain all of the egg's fat and cholesterol, and almost half of the protein! And as we mentioned earlier, fats, oils, and cholesterol are great for the hair strand since they help the hair absorb more moisture.

Previous Recipe: Herbal Shampoo, Shealoe Butter, Homemade Rosewater, Sulfur Growth Aid, Cayenne Pepper Stimulant, The 2Bossay Growth Aid, Moe's Growth Oil, Moisturizing Spritz

I was just reminded of this recipe thanks to Loo. I've been meaning to try it and will next week.

Brown Sugar Exfoliating Scrub
  • 1 TBSP brown sugar or quinoa
  • 3 TBSP conditioner
Mix together to create a thick consistency. Wet hair in shower and rub the paste on your fingertips. Apply to scalp and massage gently in a circular motion, starting at the nape of your neck and moving upward. Linger on any spots that seem tense or itchy. Rinse thoroughly, then condition.

This isn't a recipe I made up... it actually is a recipe from Curly Girl, a book by Lorraine Massey (co-owner of DevaConcepts).

Black hair absorbs 10-15% less moisture than straight hair does due to difference in distribution of lipids. Lipids are fat-soluble molecules (i.e fats, oils, and cholesterol).

Viola Davis, Oscar nominee for her amazing performance in this year’s hit “Doubt” has no doubt about what she loves in her hair. Viola is a big fan of the Miss Jessie’s line, in particular “Curly Pudding.”

She told her stylist she could not believe how soft it made her hair feel and how easy it was to comb through.

Hmmm, I was always interested in Miss Jessie's products. The Curly Buttercreme has been a favorite among a lot of coarse-haired ladies.

Product Name: Janelle Beauty Diva Smooth Kit
Price Range: $29.99
Company: Janelle Beauty (http://www.janellebeauty.com/)
Catch Phrase: Diva Smooth is a pure natural alternative to chemical based hair relaxers. Diva Smooth is based on a finely tuned mixture of all natural ingredients that when applied together with a flat-iron, your hair comes out naturally smooth and healthy.

What I Say: I was super excited to try this product and it was pretty good. I clarified my hair and applied it throughout my hair. By the way, this product is MESSY! It was dripping everywhere! I hurried and placed the plastic cap on, waited forty-five minutes, and took off the cap. My hair was hard as heck for some reason. I rinsed it out, shampooed, condition, and blow dried. My hair was still pretty kinky, but a lot softer than it was prior to using the Diva Smooth. I flat ironed with the serum provided and my hair was just okay. I slicked it back into a nice ponytail and went to work. My hair had a nice wave to it towards the front, but the back was still pretty kinky. I think this product would work best for 3c/4a hair types. 4b girls would need about two bottles to make the hair stick straight! Besides all the messiness, I liked it.

(Review of product done before big chop)

Product Tip: Mix it with your favorite moisturizing conditioner!

I've been secretly transitioning for A WHILE now and I finally decided to just chop it all off! Everybody's been asking why and telling me how long my hair has gotten... I was mid-back y'all! But to answer the question on why I cut my hair... I just got tired of getting relaxers. I'm tired of pretending my hair grows straight and trying to make it manageable by putting a hazardous chemical on my head. My hair is coarse, kinky, and I love it even more now! My new best friends are SDBSF Purifying Rinse along with the Coco Cream Rinse.

Big shout out to Loolalooh, creator of the Wasijiru Collection, MssMylo, and Dalilredmama for the support and help.

I'm neck length for the first time since '06... I'm aiming for full shoulder length by the end of the year. Wish me luck! Feel free to discuss this further in the comments.
