I was looking at the stats for the page views of TCHD and thought about you guys and your hair care journey. So, let's talk:

  • How far into your hair care journey are you?
  • What products are you using?
  • How has your progress been?

Stuff like that. Feel free to add anything more. I want to see how you guys are doing.

I've beentaking care of my hair for aboux 4 months now and my hair is growing nicely. I've been using Suave and V05 products, but I really want to try the replenishing pack.

I have been taking care of my hair for about six months now. During that time, I stretched 16 weeks before getting a low lye relaxer from Design Essentials. I wash once a week and rollerset. I use vatika oil and UBH protein conditioner as a pre-poo overnight and shikakai bar shampoo, Keracare Dry and Itchy Scalp conditioner and Mizani Smoothing Serum as a leave-in. I have had some growth and reached shoulder length but my goal is BSL(bra strap length).

I actually just started my hair care journey 3 weeks ago. Well, sort of. Anyway, I co-wash 3-5 days with Suave Humectant and Deep Condition with ORS Replenishing Packs and ORS Mayo. I also use a shikakai/amla mix once a week. I just did a home made carmelization and it was wonderful! Even did it on my 3 year old the next day.

I use SCurl and seal with Vatika every night. I now use a MN/Sulfur mixture 5 days a week. And, I massage my scalp with my own oil mixture. I have, but hardly use Design Essentials Anti Itch shampoo, stimulations conditioner and hair creme. Lots of stuff, I know, but I am trying not to be a product junky!

My hair feels great with all the co-washing and I know that unlike before, my 3-4 months stretching will be easier and I will retain length due to less breakage. Prepooing is a must! As is hand combing. I aim for armpit length (I'm SL) this June/July and BSL by Dec.

Wish me luck!

Congrats on reaching shoulder length! 16 weeks? That's awesome. I think you'll make it to BSL in no time with the way your regimen is. BTW, What's your hair type?

@ solomonsydelle
Girl, you already know how I feel about ORS and Suave. I think you'll make your goals, I've seen it happen!

Make sure you guys inform me when you reach your goals! :)

Thanks so much for responding! Love your website.

I have never figured out the hair typing. Help! Eventhough my hair is relaxed when I wash my hair it curls up like a curly do (which is how I wear it when the weather's warm). Some curls are looser than others and some in the back are tight. I guess it is fine and a little thin. What type does that seem to be?
Also, do you know of any product that really adds thickness? I'm wondering if the years of relaxers and color have taken its toll.

You know what, I've heard of some ladies whose hair doesn't really react to a relaxer. One of my friends, who has Alicia Keys type curls, had her hair relaxed and it reverted back to curly in a week! She said she didn't leave it on for long though. How long do you leave yours in?

Anyhoo, as for the hair typing system, it can be a little confusing but here's a basic system:

2a, 2b, 2c
Loose/Wavy curls.

3a, 3b, 3c
Thicker, coily curls. Alicia Keys and Tracee Ellis Ross fall into this category.

4a, 4b
Kinky, coily hair. 4b is the thickest. Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill fall into this category.

Well, I kinda just started my hair journey. Although im starting it at a little longer than armpit length.

My hair is relaxed and lookin at my new growth last week I am between 3c and 4a.

I just found this site earlier this week and i love it!! I somehow found it from browsing through lhcf and i didnt know that there were people like me that were this dedicated to having healthy hair. I love it here AND its free!!

I just got a relaxer last week and i usually wash every two weeks. According to my stylist i've been "prescribed" a poo and cond from the Nairobi line...i'm gonna try it Saturday...and she told me I need to do deep conditionings...i thought i was cool with the "just wash every two weeks and use a conditioner every time."...thing. NOPE! lol

I also keep my ends dusted to keep it looking fuller. Even though its as thick as mud!!

So Im doin a new regimen starting Next Week and i'm gonna deep condition every week...wash every two weeks, stretch my relaxer for 12 weeks...really works!!!....and cut down on heat. I'm gonna try prepooing with my shampooing too.

I'm going for BSL to MBL by the summer. Just gotta up the hydration factor.

Hope ya'll r doing well with ur hair goal...keep it up tchd!!

Oh yeah...I also wrap every night...alternating sides every night...and i do not do not DO NOT use hair lotions! They dry my hair out! Nor grease...i'm afraid of them...anything that sprays...oil sheen...is my friend...i occasionally use conditioning gel for my flyaways when i do a ponytail.

I'm so glad that you're starting out your hair care journey with a great regimen like that. Deep conditioning is the ish for real! Helps a lot with new growth and overall hair health. Keep me updated on the hair progress by the way!

Also, does your hair shed when you wrap? My hair would shed like a dog until I switched to a seamless comb and cross-wrapping.

@ belle cheveux For some reason...it sheds less. I do experience shedding though...so i started alternating sides to see if that would help bc i don't like doing a bun at night bc i get that wave at the end and it makes me wanna use heat...ya know?..so if i see a difference...i'll keep ya posted!

Hello, I found your blog on BHM and I must say I am loving it. My hair journey began in January. I have el hair, and would really like to get it to sl. I am currently using creme of nature shampoo, keracare conditioner, neutrogena leave in, castor oil, tea tree oil, temple balm, and Elasta mango butter. In addition I am using Aphogee reconstructor, and and Elasta protein treatment who's name I can't remember right now. I was using MN, but I was having dizzy spells. I don't know if MN was the reason, but I haven't had the spells since I stopped using it. Also, I use turn up the heat by paul mitchell when I flat iron.

I am just beginning to notice the new growth at 10 weeks post. My hair grows slowly, and I must admit I usually use a lot of heat on it. I am trying to get away from that though. I recently began using satin covered spong rollers at night instead of curling.

@ Autumn Love
So glad that you're apart of BHM! BHM and LHCF are the bomb. From the looks of your products, I can see that you're serious about your hair care journey. Now about that heat usage... The best way to slowly cut down on heat usage, IMO, is by using the heat for a little bit, and then air drying the rest of the way. When I needed to cut down the use of my blow dryer, I would blow dry my roots for about 5 minutes and then let the rest of my hair air dry. After a while, my hair started loving the air drying better.

UPDATE!

Well...i've been doing my new regimen for almost a month now...good results! Less breakage...MUCH Less...and my hair feels silkier and healthier! And it grew an inch already! EVOO is a miracle oil to me...and my hair is way more manageable!

Biotin is key as well. Its gettin hotter in Central Florida...so i might up my co-washing too...espaecially since im in the MBL Challenge on BHM (LadyBird).
