One thing I honestly love is answering e-mails to women, and sometimes men, who really want to improve the health of their hair. Why? They take the advice and change their hair for the better. One thing I HATE, is that when my friends or family ask me for help, they don't do it and say, "You have good hair" or "You must be mixed or something." I hardly ever answer their questions because of those responses and the "You're not white. Your hair will fall out" statements. This is the topic of the day.
  • Do you share your hair care knowledge with friends and family?
  • Why or why not?
  • What are some responses you get?
I just wanna hear what everyone has to say so feel free to jump in at anytime!

LOL, belle i know exactly how u feel! i use to share hair tips and knowledge with family and friends and they use to say "don't believe everything u read" or "they're probably mixed" and it's so frustrating!!!!!! Now, i just leave them to suffer lol i know i sound mean, but hey they think black people in general can't EVER have beautiful healthy long hair, it's so sad =(

Thanks for the great replies!

@ Amina
I know, right? My mother wants that "miracle' growth aid that'll grow her hair down to her back overnight. It takes time and patience.

I think that one day, what we know about hair will become the norm. Why? Because LHCF has 45,000 members, BHM has close to 40,000, and LHC probably has more than that. With all those members, knowledge is BOUND to be passed on. It might not happen tomorrow, but it will. :)

I'm natural and my mom is relaxed. I don't really talk about hair unless hers is looking terrible at the moment or she asks me something. We have gotten into some heated debates about hair. I am not a nappy nazi but I encourage her to consider transition because of the constant struggle with her hair. I see many women online who do a good job with relaxed hair. But if you never want to do anything to it, on a consistent basis, it will always be damaged and broken off. This is my mom completely. She wants to run to the salon for touch ups but does nothing in between, aside from washing. No deep treatments, no nothing.

She recently commented on my hair saying that mine is all long now and she wants hers to be the same. I told her that would require cutting off her relaxed hair and then it would require some work. She immediately said that I'm just trying to make it hard for her. Uhhhhhh.

The saddest part of this hair thing for Black women, in my opinion is that we want a quick fix in a bottle of the latest shampoo, hair spray, creme, or relaxer. And if your hair is relaxed you really need to be on top of things because of the potential for damage.

As far as people I talk to on a friendly level, I don't bring up hair unless they have natural hair too. And even then I am leery because some think that they can't take advice from me or exchange ideas because my hair is "too course and the dreaded nappy."

OKAY, this is gonna be LONG...

In the beginning I was so excited about all of the knowledge that I'd gained that I wanted to share it with all of my friends. HOWEVER, I was quickly shut down and told that "only white people do that stuff" and that "black people hair just don't grow that long." they told me I was doing too much to my hair, and just yesterday while I was moisturizing my hair my mom told me that my hair is screaming for me to leave it alone. I was like "okay mom..."
- It's funny though because just the other day my friends were saying, "Wow your hair looks great! And it looks so healthy," but then the next day tell me that I shouldn't be doing so much to my hair. I guess they don't put two and two together.
-I used to try to help them out but they don't want to put in the work anyway so now I just keep it all to myself and just can't wait until I have some nice swangin' BSL hair to see what they say.

I talk to my friends and family regardless if they want to hear it or not, because my mom is a hair stylist and it's kind of funny how my regimen bothers her. She always say's that it's un necessary to "make" my all natural products and heat (blow dryer/pressing comb) is not the devil.
LOL and my boyfriend (bless his heart), Is tired of all my protective styles (BRAIDS), especially after my 1st month, but he'll get over it.
My Dad just wants me to be happy and my brothers really don't care.
I see it as, this is what I desire for myself...you know? A personal goal and just to be an example of how African American women can have long beautiful hair.

I have tried to give advice to my friends and family but all i get is well i can't use that white people hairstuff or they give me hippy comments, the only person that will listen and take my advice is my mom and my best friend so now i just pass it along to just them.

I don't really talk about my hair or my hair channel to my family unless they ask.. most of the time they don't take the advice..I tell people to have fun with their hair..just go sit in front of the mirror and get creative..try a few things out... It can be really fun.. but no one really takes that advice (besides my viewers I guess) so yeah..I speak when spoken to about my hair. I don't like wasting breath.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. I am very serious about having healthy hair, about 4 years ago I did the BC and have really worked on getting my hair healthy, retaining my length and keeping it strong. Well I am always trying to talk to friends and family about it but they just brush me off, they think that because I have fine, curly/wavy hair that either I can't understand their hair or that it is just genetics that make my hair healthy and looking nice (which i don't understand with my fam bc I we have the SAME genes). I have just gotten to the point where I only talk about it when asked..it really upsets me because it is like they totally discount all my hard work.
