I made this decision a while back but never really announced it officially on here. Well, it's official! I will no longer go to the salon for the time being. Honestly, I realized that hair dressers care more about money than the overall health of my hair. My hair became so thin after that one bad experience back in March 2008 and I am now getting some type of thickness back. Should you stop visiting salons? No. I'm not trying to convert anyone into D-I-Y stylists, but not going to the salon can have some great benefits like:
For 2009, it's on. I will gain my thickness back, take more vitamins, drink more water, exercise more, do deep breathing exercises, and of course get my hair to either mid-back or waist length.
- More money in the bank (y'all know gas is expensive so that's good)
- Less worry of heat damage or overprocessing
- No hair
trimscuts from scissor-happy stylists - A helluva lot more thickness
- Only you know to treat your hair
For 2009, it's on. I will gain my thickness back, take more vitamins, drink more water, exercise more, do deep breathing exercises, and of course get my hair to either mid-back or waist length.

I am so with you on that one! I would go every four months to touch up my color, I am getting some wisdom wiskers (as I call it) but I figured it out... So I can put my money elsewhere. Congrats!!!

I'm not visiting salons anymore either. My stylist wouldn't know what to do with natural hair anyway. I'm doing my own trims of 1/4 inches every 2 months. Before when my stylist did it she blew the hair dry before she trimmed. So now I am saving my hair from that damage. Its saving me money, time and damage. Plus, I think they try to get you to colour your hair so that you can keep coming back to maintain it. When they say products like Sun-In and at home hair colours are bad I don't know if I can believe them. The most damage I had to my hair was when I had it coloured in a salon and they lightened my hair before putting colour on. Plus, whenever I get a trim it seems like she cuts too much off.

same here...i haven't been to a salon in 2 years!
There are few hairstylists who care about the health of your hair..remember those personalized charts? Now, it's all about money...

Oh, yes. The dreaded salon "trims." I can only imagine where my hair would be now if I had trimmed my hair by myself...

I'm already a little bit of a diy kind of girl. I only go to the salon for a touchup.

A few years back I pledged to only visit a salon on special occasions. I've saved so much money since then, despite the many hair products I purchase.

@ Angy
You can try separating your hair into eight ponytails and trimming the ends of the individual ponytails.
OR
You can do an occasional Search & Destroy.

I'm really leaning towards this one. I only visit my salon for cuts and color (which I'm cutting out)...and I was going to start having her apply my relaxer since I mess it up. She's so sweet but I know she has no care for the overall health of my hair. I have some sisters who can do relaxers and since I'm wearing wigs for a while...I can trim myself. Onto healthier hair and more money in the bank!!!

Belle, are you going to self-relax?
October 3, 2008 at 9:10 AM
That's right Belle! I too have many of those goals for 2009- exercise, drink more water, and meditating ( I fell off with that and need to get back on it ASAP). And you're right. I feel that many of these stylists don't really have our hair's interest in mind- just theirs. Now if there were a Reniece in town then I would most definitely come up with the money to go see her. That's what you call an EDUCATED stylist!

i think that salons are great. I only go like 2 times a year for a relaxer (college, jobless), or I get a family member to relax it. I don't want to cut, color, or relax my own hair.
I leave it to pros.
- I seriously believe that some peeps have put off salons when they know that they have only recently figured out what to do between salon visits.
- You didn't always wash' deep condition once a week. You didn't always take vitamins, pre-poo and protective style.
-I think pros get a bad rep, but I leave the salon with healthy hair, and it's usually what i do within the next 2-3 months that breaks my hair off.
-If you go to a bad stylist then that's a whole 'nother story.
