I'm pretty sure all of you are aware the I transitioned to Natural not too long ago. March 2nd to be exact. I just wanted to know what's going on with you and your natural hair...

Are you Relaxed but contemplating going Natural?

Are you Natural but contemplating relaxing?

Are you either one and want to stay that way?

Discuss! Discuss! I know that there are some people that want to relax, but are scared or want to go Natural but don't know how. Tell us your story and we'll help!

My last relaxer was 11/29/08, and I decided in January that I was ready to transition. Right now I'm about 4 months post, and I'm loving my transition so far. If I was still in "relaxer mode" the amount of new growth that I have right now would frustrate me. Its amazing how changing my focus to growing a headful of beautiful curls has made me embrace my natural texture. My hair already makes the cutest little coils at the roots. Right now I'm exploring textured styles like braidouts and twistouts, and I'd like to get some Senegalese twists as well.

hmmmm...i was thinking about texting rather than relaxing, but i'm not sure how i'd look with curly hair....and i love my straight hair! i'm really starting to take care of it now, i'm really working on getting it past my shoulders, and i've started trimming my ends myself, which is a huge relief for me since i don't have to worry about chasing down the girl who used to do it for me. i might start texting later on though....

I've been transitioning since October 11, 2008. I'm currently rocking a sew-in which is making my transition sooooo much easier. I'm definitely going to be concentrating on finding some products that are compatable with my natural hair once I cut it all off.

I'm actually ready to BC right after I remove this but I will be braiding my hair up until it's at a length I'm comfortable with. I'm going to enjoy being natural though! I think I'll prefer to wear my hair straight a lot but still rock my curls when I feel like it.

My last perm was 10/18/08. I have shoulder length hair and I want to do a big chop! My hair is very damaged, but I've being trying to take care of it as much as possilbe. I think once I cut it all off and start from scratch it would be much easier for me to take care of it! My sister tells me I shouldn't cut it to get rid of perm because, as she's puts it, "I have good hair" and shouldn't cut it! LOL, but I'm not going to listen to her! I think I'm going to cut it next month for my birthday! By the way I love this site and read it everyday its very helpful!

My last relaxer was Oct 29, 2008. I decided to transition in December. I realized that I didn't really know my hair. I never got the chance to make an informed decision about whether or not I wanted to keep my hair in its natural state. I'm closing out my fifth month of transitioning. I'm not sure when I'll do the big chop. I've spent most of the five months braided up or twisted up. I'm taking the twists down in about 3 weeks. I think I'll start doing some roller sets or twist and curls.

I really want to do the big chop now though. I'm holding back because I'm trying to finish my last semester of school and I know that getting to know my natural hair is going to take a lot of time and patience in the beginning and I just can't give her what she needs right now. I'm a little sad about it though because I feel like I'm losing time with my natural hair. It's like watching a child grow up. I'm missing the first couple of stages.

The last time that I relaxed my hair was August 5th, 2008 and I intend to do the big chop on September 5th, 2009 which just happens to be falling on a Saturday :). People in my family are taking bets on when I will relax my hair and I am feeling very frustrated because I've have been wearing it out all this time and experiencing a lot of breakage. (Sigh) 7 months and counting...

I am currently relaxed but I'm seriously thinking about going natural. I'm a little scared though because I don't want to do a BC and I'm not a big fan of braids/weaves/wigs so I'm wondering how hard it's going to be to maintain both textures. I'm hoping to get through the summer by doing braidouts. I'm excited but scared at the same time!

My hair is natural and I want it to stay that way. I learn things about my hair every day and its fun! someone asked me if this was a phase? I said hell no. I refuse to relax again, I'm done with the harsh chems in relaxers..if i'm ever tired of the curls and coils I would just flat iron then but no chems.

My last texturizer was 04/08. My last perms was somewhere between 1998 / 1999. In between those dates, I have had 2 color treatments (bleached than had a pretty red put into my head with pretty auburn highlights). Can you yell "Hair gone".

Chopped it off and braided my hair. Now I am trying to learn about my natural hair. Such a challenge. I am learning that products for some just arent for my hair. No two days worth of curls are the same, so everyday I get surprise hair. I am experimenting with hair thingys, and not anything that is elastic, pulls my hair right out.

So Belle, I thank you for this blog!!

@ Shay: Have you ever considered a protective style like a sew-in or braids/twists? Protective styles helped me A LOT through the transitional period.

@ JustMe: I say, just go ahead and wear braidouts for awhile. That way, you can manage both textures and decide whether or not you want to stay relaxed or natural.

@ Rasheda: I got the same, "Don't cut it, you've got good hair!" remark from my mother. I just told her that my hair grows naturally kinky and I'd like to start wearing that way. Afterward, she helped me trim off some of the relaxed ends.

@ Pam: I'm so where you are. One day my hair is incredibly soft, next day, it growls at me. But I love it!

I'm natural and what some would call a vet. I have no plans of ever relaxing or applying any texture changing chemicals again. For a while I was into dying it red but I'm over that too. I wanted to be natural for a long time as a tween and teen and finally learned how to properly take care of natural hair in my 20's. That's when I transitioned for a short amount of time and chopped. I have not looked back since. My hair is easily damaged so I take care not to add anything that could adversely affect in the snap of a finger including heat. If I blow dry my hair I RARELY flat iron. And no my hair isn't wavy or super soft curly at all. It's plain kinky with tons of shrinkage. Many derogatory names have used to describe it but I love it.

I've been contemplating transitioning on and off for about a year. It'd be nice to get to know my natural texture (haven't dealt with it since I was a kid). On the other hand, I don't dislike being relaxed. I've decided to stretch longer than normal to see what I decide.

Its probably been almost a yr since my BC, and tho i love just being able to wash n go in the morning, i'm finding it hard to find styles that really go with me. I have little support from my friends and family, who loved my hair relaxed. i also feel like it grew faster that way, but i'm sure its only because it wasnt in a giant poof so i could tell more easily. i want to keep my natural hair, but sometimes i feel relaxed hair would be easier for me. i donno what to do! lol

I have not relaxed my hair since somewhere in Sept of 2008. I am deathly afraid of the BC but have found that my 6 mos post new growth absolutely loves the pre-poo concoction that I create each week. Every week it varies but mainly consists of coconut, jojoba and olive oil often mixed with shea butter, glycerin and 1/2 an avocado. I have experienced a lot of shedding but so far it hasnt been uncontrollable. While I do love the idea of being natural, I agree with Charmaine in that I will probably still prefer to wear it straight. Luckily I have been able to maintain the relaxed look with my Chi Iron that I use only once a week on my freshly shampooed and deep conditioned hair. I look forward to what else this experience may bring and enjoy reading the comments of all my other natural sisters.
