The woman you see in the picture is the first African American to be nominated for an Academy Award! Dorothy Dandridge was a beautiful singer and actress. Her movie, Carmen Jones, grossed an estimated $750,000 back in the fifties. She died in 1965 due to a supposed drug overdose, but her role in putting African American actresses in the spotlight lives on.

Hattie McDaniel was the 1st Black american to win an academy Award in 1939.
Dorothy was the 1st Black American women to be nominated for an Academy Award in Best Actress in a Leading Role.
