I'm starting braidlocs and I want to know where I can get more information on braidlocs and how to maintain them. I know about Cherie King's book but I don't have the money to buy it. I would like to know if there was any FREE sites/guides I could refer to. Thanks

I don't have anything to ask, just now, but I would like to say I love your new banner. It's very girly girl.

@mzhoneythang There is another great alternative. It's permanent hair color made from pure vegetable dyes that's just as intens ase PPD-based colors without the problems of henna. Here's the link to check out.

@Anonymous The best, and I mean BEST, cleansing conditioners on the market have to be WEN by Chaz Dean.

@Leandra S. You can try MyNHCG, Nappturality, or YouTube. I hope this helps!

@Anonymous Thank you! I worked all night on it to get it just right. :)

Hi there!
Wondering if you could point me to a website or salon website for natural hair care in the Los Angeles area. My nieces are biracial (African American and white), living in the L.A. suburbs (Northridge area). The 6-year-old has 3c textured hair; the 2-year-old has 2c, maybe 3a hair. Their mom tries hard, but the kids' hair seems to be getting dried out and broken off at the edges...
Any help would be awesome!

@BloggingQueen I totally recommend she visit Naturally Curly. It lists salons by members who've actually been there and they have an online store where you can buy products for the kids. A great starter kit would be the Curly Bubbly kit for kids.

Hi,do you know of any good products for finger coils. My hair is about 2inches long, and I want to do coils. I don't want to use gel, but want something that still gives hold and shine. Thanks!
July 17, 2009 at 4:42 AM
@Shoshoni The best products for finger coils are moisturizing hair cremes with hold (the hold ingredient is carbomer). CURLS Whipped Cream, Blended Beauty Happy Nappy Styles, and Hair Rules Kinky Curling Cream are great products. As far as drugstore brands go, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in is great!

@mzhoneythang I checked the ingredients for the vegetable dyes and they do contain both henna and indigo. :(

is henna bad? i used it for like....a few months a while ago. i liked the color i got, but wasn't sure if it was good for your hair or not.
July 20, 2009 at 1:21 PM
@mzhoneythang No, it's not bad... but the dye molecule, lawsone, adds weight to the hair strand, making it "looser." Some people like it, but some don't. As with anything else, make sure to use caution when using it.

Hey Belle. I would like to know your daily routine and how often you detangle... because I recently BC'd and I'm not quite sure if if I'm doing the right things. Thanks! =]

@LeanderS, Keep It Kinky has just started braid locs like 6 weeks ago! Check her blog or youtube to follow her advice, ask any questions and get some tips.

@LEESH'Sz LIFE I co-wash everyday with Suave Tropical Coconut or Aussie Moist Conditioner. After washing, I moisturize with Oyin Handmade Honey Hemp Conditioner, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in, or one of the co-washing conditioners.
Right now, I detangle about twice a week with the Denman D4 brush or a wide-tooth comb. As my hair grows longer, I'll most likely detangle once a week to cut back on manipulation.

ok, so i'm about to color my hair with a semi-permanent color. do i need to use a color shampoo? i currently use burt's bees more moisture.
July 30, 2009 at 9:38 AM
@mzhoneythang No need for a color shampoo, I believe the Burt Bee's should be fine since the brand is mostly natural and the shampoo doesn't have sulfates.

ok i have another question. i tried to dye my hair with a semi-permanent color and it didnt' take. my hair is dark brown (about 75% of it is still colored from henna) and i want to dye it a reddish color. could i do it with a demi?
July 30, 2009 at 1:46 PM
Semi colors stain the surface of the hair rather than the inner layers like permanent does. Demi stains a little bit better and depending on the color can look as if you dyed it. I dyed my hair a red color (Cinnaberry by Natural Instincts) and while my hair still looked brown, it had a red tint at times.
Check out these links to see the color difference in my hair:

I've always had very thin edges (from birth to now) and I just know there is something that can thicken them and make them fuller. Hell I need a whole head of full hair. Any suggestions?
August 15, 2009 at 12:26 AM
Hi Laqueena, you could try using castor oil, Nioxin products, or taking Biotin. They all help thicken hair. So does products with panthenol.

My question is about Indian-type herbs such as alma, henna, etc... How much more beneficial are they than our typical jojoba and evoo? Not just "here are the facts" but your personal experience.

@Peace Omen I've personally never tried Ayurvedic-based herbs, but usually people love Ayurveda. Afroveda, an Ayurvedic hair product provider, is something I want to try. You could probably find the answer you're looking for there. If not, I'll be trying some Ayurvedic techniques soon!

Hi, I recently started to transition from relaxed to natural and I just wanted to know if after I get the relaxed ends will my hair be the same texture it was before I started putting chemicals in my hair or has the use of chemicals changed my natural hair texture a bit?
August 22, 2009 at 12:09 AM
@Anonymous What I've realized during my transition and natural journey is that even after cutting all my relaxed ends off, the texture I was left with, wasn't my true texture. It was dry, rough, and absolutely frustrating. After snipping off the "scab hair," my hair texture improved and I love the softness. I think relaxers seep in just a little deeper than we think...

I'm getting a sew-in full head weave on friday and since I read a while ago that you used to use sew-ins as a protective style, I was hoping for some advice in caring for my hair underneath. E.g. how often to moisturize and wash without ending up with matted hair after the take down.
Thank youuu x
August 27, 2009 at 12:23 AM
My weave regimen is simple. I moisturize at least twice a week with a moisturizing spray, wash & deep condition every two weeks, and only keep the sew-in for two months. I also make sure to detangle carefully after taking out the weave, deep condition, detangle again, and then air dry.

Sunday makes 4 months natuarl and all the sudden I'm noticing more hair in the comb than usual. I wash my hair 1x a week with Miss Jessie's Cleansing Cream & just do a wash and go b/c I have a 2in TWA. Any thoughts why I'm seeing more hair in the comb?
Thanks!
September 27, 2009 at 2:18 AM
If you're just using the Miss Jessie's product every week, that could be the problem. The hair needs a balance to stay healthy and breakage-free and when the balance is thrown off, it results in more unnecessary hair loss. Try incorporating some deep conditioning with a light protein every few weeks to help minimize breakage.
